Are you looking for a portable ventless air conditioner?

You have come to the right place.

Portable air conditioners require ventilation, usually through a window, allowing them to exhaust warm air outside.

Ventless portable air conditioners are designed to cool rooms with no window or ready route to exhaust hot air outside.

Ventless ACs (also known as swamp or evaporative coolers) work differently than ordinary portable ACs and have certain limitations.

Cooling performance is the biggest drawback – ventless air conditioners won’t cool a room as well as conventional ACs do.

In fact, ventless ACs are really only suited for cooling rooms in hot, low-humidity areas like Arizona and California.

What Are Ventless Air Conditioners?

Most portable AC units use a compressor with refrigerant to cool the air inside a room.

A vent hose allows hot exchange air to be expelled from the room through a vent hose. The hose prevents hot air from being blown back into the room, keeping it cool.

Technically, a ventless air conditioner does not qualify as an air conditioner.

A ventless air conditioner is more like a mild room cooler.

Ventless ACs blow warm indoor air over water or ice. The air becomes cooler as the water evaporates into the air. The cooler and more humid air is the returned into the room.

Ventless ACs do not exhaust hot air, so they don’t require a vent.

However, to prevent humidity buildup, keeping the door and windows open is imperative.

A ventless AC’s cooling performance is mostly dependent on the ambient temperature and relative humidity of the room. The hotter and dryer it is, the cooler the air it produces.

Ventless ACs do not work well when it’s humid.

And even if your home is in in a hot and dry region, don’t expect a swamp cooling system to keep you frigidly cool.

Are Ventless Air Conditioners Effective Without a Vent Hose?

Yes, they are.

You may see some compressor portable ACs described as ventless air conditioners. That’s only partially true, however.

Ventilating a portable AC that is in dehumidifying mode is not required unless it is a tankless AC.

However, ventilation is necessary for cooling with such a unit. Otherwise, the AC wastes energy trying to cool down the room.

For swamp/evaporative coolers, a vent hose is not necessary.

A swamp cooler that is too big for a small space should be avoided.

A too-big a cooler will quickly make the air in a small room uncomfortable and wet.

The DeLonghi EV250 WH is our top choice for small rooms.

This compact evaporative cooler blasts out lots of cool air for its small size.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

The DeLonghi Ev250.WH is ideal for cooling smaller spaces such as a bedroom, home office, or small living room.

Although the manufacturer hasn’t specified the ideal room size, considering the airflow (206 CFM), we recommend it for rooms less than 250 sq. ft.

It is also useful in larger rooms, but you’ll need to position it close to your body to get maximum cooling.

The EV250.WH includes an ice pack to improve cooling performance. It is good to freeze the ice pack in your refrigerator and then place it inside the cooler. The cooler air that passes over ice feels much more comfortable. The cooling effect of ice melting quickly is temporary, however.

The EV250.WH comes with a washable filter to remove dust and allergens from the air that passes through it. The EV250.WH also cools and humidifies the room.

The EV250.WH features a simple to use control panel and display at the top. The remote control helps to change the mode of cooling, fan-only or fan-only. In addition, you can adjust the fan speed and set an auto-off timer.

Limitations and Complaints

The 1.19 gallon tank is a small. One tank lasts about five hours, so you’ll need to refill it multiple times on hot days.

For continuous filling, the optional hose connection is useful.

Bottom line

Surprisingly quieter than what we’ve come to expect from swamp coolers, the DeLonghi EV250.WH is a great choice for small spaces where a loud fan can be annoying.

Best for Rooms Up To 250 sq. ft.

Another great option for small to medium sized rooms is the Luma Comfort EC110S evaporative cooler.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

Luma Comfort EC110S features a tower design that improves air distribution throughout the room. Thanks to the oscillating fan, you’ll feel cool regardless of where you are in the room.

The Luma Comfort evaporative cooling cooler works well for spaces of 250 sq. ft. or less.

Luma Comfort EC110S cooler has a powerful 500 CFM airflow that quickly cools the room.

This cooler uses a lot of water, however. The 1.76-gallon tank needs to be refilled frequently, especially when the fan speed is high.

Selecting one of the lower speeds helps reduce noise and water consumption.

Luma Comfort EC110S includes a remote control that makes it easy to use; no need to keep standing up to adjust the setting.

In addition, the free-rolling casters make it easy to move around from one room to another.

Limitations and Complaints

Compact swamp coolers are great for small rooms, but they have a downside: their water tanks.

The Luma Comfort EC110S’s 1.76-gallon tank doesn’t last long.

Also, it doesn’t have an adaptor for hoses, so you need to manually refill it.

Tip: If you want all-night cooling, select the lowest fan speed. It’ll consume water at a slower rate.

The Luma Comfort EC110S does not have an air filter. Therefore, the Luma Comfort EC110S doesn’t purify the air like other evaporative coolers. Consider getting an air purifier if you suffer from allergies.

Bottom line

Luma Comfort EC110S swamp cooler is an excellent, affordable option for small to medium sized rooms.

A portable AC with ventless cooling is an excellent option because you can also use it outside without consuming more energy.

In fact, in dry conditions a swamp cooler is an ideal way to cool down a porch or gazebo.

The Honeywell CO30XE is an evaporative cooler suitable for indoor and outdoor environments. It can cool up to 320 square feet and can withstand the elements.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

The Honeywell CO30XE is a bit loud, but it pumps out lots of cool air. It cools large areas quickly with an airflow rate of 525CFM.

The large tank holds 7.9 gallons that lasts anywhere from 4 to 10 hours, depending on the humidity, ambient temperature, and fan speed.

You can also connect a hose to provide a continuous water supply if you don’t want to keep refilling the tank.

On hot days, fill the ice container with ice for faster cooling.

We recommend using the Honeywell CO30XE in large rooms only to avoid too much humidity.

This unit is ideal for outdoor use on the porch, backyard barbecue, or other outdoor spaces.

Outdoor, the noise is no problem.

The Honeywell CO30XE is rated for outdoor use, is made from UV-resistant materials and includes a GFCI connector.

Other features include remote control and a timer you can set for 7.5 hours.

Limitations and Complaints

The Honeywell CO30XE is loud, as we have mentioned.

In a small space, the noise is distracting.

If you are looking for a bedside swamp cooler, this is not the one – unless the sound of a fan puts you to sleep.

The Honeywell CO30XE also does not have an air filter.

Bottom line

The Honeywell CO30XE cools an outdoor area with efficiency and low energy consumption.

It is also ideal for cooling large indoor rooms when noise is not a concern.

The Hessaire MC18M evaporative cooling unit is rated to cool spaces up to 500 square feet. This makes it ideal for large rooms or outdoor areas.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

Hessaire MC18M boasts a massive 1300 CFM airflow.

This cooler pushes more air than other swamp coolers making it an excellent choice for really large spaces.

The Hessaire MC18M is suitable for brief use outdoors in dry weather, but it is not recommended for use in a gazebo or porch. It is not intended for extreme outdoor use according to the manufacturer. It doesn’t come with a GFCI plug, either.

We recommend the Honeywell Co30XE, which we reviewed above, for more exposed locations like your backyard and pool deck.

There are two modes for the Hessaire MC18M: fan-only and cooling.

There are two fan settings for each mode, HI or LOW.

In addition, you can adjust the airflow or level of cooling to meet your comfort requirements.

The 4.8-gallon tank can cool for up to 3-4 hours, depending on fan speed.

You can connect a hose to continue filling if you don’t want to keep adding water. The float valve prevents the tank from filling up.

For easy mobility, the Hessaire MC18M comes is on casters. In addition, two of the wheels lock to keep the cooler from rolling away.

Limitations and Complaints

The frequent reflilling of the relatively small tank is a bother – and it can be difficult to open or close the tank door.

The Hessaire MC18M does not have a timer, either – so you can’t set it to automatically turn off after a certain time.

Bottom line

Cooling large spaces with an AC unit is costly if you live in hot and dry areas.

The Hessaire MC18M, on the other hand, keeps you cool and comfortable at a fraction of the price.

Best Swamp Cooler with Filter

If you have asthma or allergies, look for an evaporative cooler with a filter. Otherwise, the cooler will blow dust and allergen-filled air in your face.

Honeywell CS10XE evaporative cooler uses a washable carbon filter to remove allergens and odors.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

The Honeywell CS10XE portable, ventless air conditioner is small enough to fit in small spaces up to 175 square feet. Therefore, this unit is ideal for small rooms, such as a bedroom or living room.

The tank is 2.6 gallons in size and lasts between 6-8 hours, depending on the humidity and fan speed.

If you are using the Honeywell CS10XE in your bedroom, you can set the auto-off timer (up to 7.5 hours) to have the cooler switch off automatically after you sleep.

Unlike most ventless portable ACs, the Honeywell CS10XE comes with a filter. And not a basic mesh filter like in some coolers, but a high-quality active carbon filter.

Carbon filters trap smaller particles and also filter out odors.

You can wash the filter in your Honeywell CS10XE, so it doesn’t need to be replaced often.

The cooler is lightweight and small for easy transportability. In addition, the cooler is easy to move around on the ground thanks to the castors at its bottom.

Limitations and Complaints

The Honeywell CS10XE swamp cooler is loud, especially if the fan speed is high. To make it quieter at night, reduce the fan speed.

Bottom line

If you’re looking for a portable, ventless air conditioner that also functions as an air purifier, the Honeywell CS10XE is a good choice. Although the CS10XE can’t replace a dedicated air purifier, it is ideal for rooms with moderate to high levels of air pollution.

Best Hose-Connected Unit

It is tiring to add water to a cooler constantly, especially during hot days.

It is best not to get a cooler with a large tank. You’ll get 6-8 hours of tops, but you want a cooler that doesn’t require any topping up. Ventless ACs such as the Hessaire MC37M have an inlet where you can connect a garden hose that keeps the tank constantly full.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

Ventless portable ACs require a lot of water to cool large spaces. Even with a 10-gallon tank cooler, you find that you only get 4-5 hours of cooling before you have to refill it.

The Hessaire MC37M evaporative cooling cooler is an excellent option if you need to cool large spaces without refilling them often.

Instead of filling the tank with water every few hours, you can simply connect a garden hose to maintain the tank’s fullness. The tank is kept from filling up with water by a float valve.

The Hessaire MC37M’s extra-powerful airflow is 3100 CFM enough to cool spaces as large as 950 square feet.

The Hessaire MC37M is ideal for large, open-plan living spaces, sunrooms, and open basements. It can also be used outdoors. However, the cooler is not designed for outdoor use, so make sure to keep it in the shade.

You can set the Hessaire MC37M to one of three fan speeds. To enjoy a fan-only setting, you can turn off the pump, which is perfect when it’s cooler, and you just need to get the air moving.

Casters make it easy to move around, and a cup holder makes it convenient to keep your drink in place.

Limitations and Complaints

As we’d expected for a swamp cooler this powerful, customers say the Hessaire MC37M is noisy. Selecting a lower fan speed helps, especially at night.

Bottom line

Although it is a little more expensive than other ventless portable air conditioners, the Hessaire MC37M offers plenty of cooling power for your money. As a result, you will spend less time fiddling around with the cooler and more relaxing.

Best for Workshop or Garage

It takes a lot of power to cool a garage, workshop, or warehouse.

The Cool-Space AVALANCHE 36-VD is our top pick among portable ventless air conditioners.

It can cool areas up to 3,600 square feet with its massive 9,700 CFM airflow.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

Everything about the Cool-Space AVALANCHE 36-VD cooler is big, from the fan that circulates air throughout the room to the thick 8-inch pads that cool it down.

The tank is larger than any other we have ever seen.

It holds 46 gallons of water, which is enough to cool for 8 hours. You can also connect a garden hose, so you don’t have to keep refilling the tank.

The cooler is large and also heavy. You don’t want to push it across the floor, even with the casters. You should find a place for it with good ventilation and then let it rest there.

To ensure the highest quality build, Cool-Space AVALANCHE 36-VD is manufactured in the USA.

It comes with a 5-year warranty for parts and a lifetime warranty for the housing, instead of the standard 1-year warranty.

Other features include an adjustable fan speed, low water shutoff to protect the pump, and remote control.

Limitations and Complaints

Although the Cool-Space AVALANCHE 36-VD is equipped with casters, it is still difficult to move from one place to another.

After the water is added, it weighs 295 lbs.

Bottom line

The Cool-Space AVALANCHE 36-VD is ideal for large open work areas such as garages, workshops, and commercial spaces.

Most portable ventless air conditioners are too bulky for our taste. A nice design is a good idea for something that is prominently displayed.

The Air Choice evaporative swamp cooler is a stylish and practical option. This cooler is tower-style and features a modern LCD control panel.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

The Air Choice evaporative swamp cooler is a modern and less traditional option.

It looks like a tower fan, with vents at the sides and a broad base. The LCD control panel on the top looks modern, and it is very easy to use. It looks fantastic in white.

Air Choice works well in small spaces of up to 120 square feet. Air Choice is the ideal personal cooler for your bedroom or home office.

There are three wind speeds and three wind modes to choose from. You can also select whether the cooler should be run in a dry fan-only or wet mode.

The 70° oscillating fan ensures even distribution of cool air.

The Air Choice cooler is quieter than most portable ventless ACs. In addition, you can choose the sleep wind mode to make it almost silent and help you fall asleep without any distractions.

Air Choice cooler is lightweight that weighs only 9 pounds, making it easy to move around from one room to the next. The cooler also includes a remote control and an automatic-off timer.

Limitations and Complaints

This is not the AC you need if you’re looking for a portable, powerful ventless AC that you can use in large or mid-sized rooms. The Air Choice cooler is best used in small rooms up to 120 square footage or as a personal cooling device.

Bottom line

The Air Choice evaporative cooler is more than its looks. The Air Choice evaporative cooler cools small spaces efficiently and quickly without making a big deal.

Although they are called portable, most ventless portable air conditioners are not something you’d take with you camping.

These devices are heavy and bulky and must be plugged in.

We recommend that you buy the Batlofty portable AC rechargeable AC if you plan to go camping where there is likely to be extreme heat and dryness.

It weighs 2.2lbs, so it’s easy to transport. It also has a rechargeable battery of 5,000 mAh, so you don’t need to worry about plugging it.

PROS

CONS

Our Review

You don’t have to feel uncomfortable just because you are sleeping outdoors. You can take your Batlofty cooler with you wherever you go.

This portable swamp cooler produces cool, humid air. You can adjust the fan speed (most users recommend the lowest setting) to make it emit a cooling mist.

The Batlofty cooler is perfect for placing next to your camping bed. You can also use it as a desk or bedside refrigerator at home. You can use it in hotels or even in a car on the go.

The 700ml tank provides around 12 hours of cooling time before you have to add water. The 9-hour cooling time of the 5,000 mAH battery is maintained for up to nine hours. The included USB cable is used to recharge the battery in just 3-4 hours.

You can recharge it from a power bank, laptop, car charger, or wall adapter.

Limitations and Complaints

Batlofty, as the name suggests, is a personal space coolant. However, even in a small space, it does not cool down a room. Therefore, it is best to locate it near you to get the cool breeze.

Bottom line

If you are going camping in the western US, especially in one of the states in the southwest, the Batlofty persona evaporative cooler will make the days and nights more bearable

KUUOTE’s small size makes it easy to fit in your bedside drawer. If you’re a hot sleeper or live in hot environments, it can help you sleep faster and more comfortably.

You can put it on your desk while you are studying or working to keep cool.

You can add water or ice to the cooler. Ice creates a cooler breeze. You can also add some essential oils to your water to create an aroma.

The KUUOTE portable cooler has three fan speeds, allowing you to adjust the level of cooling. In addition, you can set a timer to turn on the seven-color night light.

Limitations and Complaints

Be realistic about your expectations. The KUUOTE portable AC cools the area around you. However, it won’t make your entire room cooler.

Bottom line

It is difficult to fall asleep in hot, dry conditions. KUUOTE cools down and makes the air more humid and easy to inhale. A nice perk is the night light.

Buying Guide: How To Choose A Ventless Portable Air Conditioner

Ventless Portable Air Conditioners

Sizing a Ventless Air Conditioner

Ventless coolers do not measure cooling performance in BTUs like compressor-based portable air conditioners do.

Instead, you consider airflow. CFM, or cubic feet per minute, is the unit of airflow.

To quickly calculate the CFM required, take the volume of a room (cubic footage), and divide it in half.

Imagine that you need to cool 100 sq with a 9ft ceiling.

The cubic footage is 900 cubic ft., and the optimal CFM for a ventless cooler is 450 sq. ft.

Maximum Square Footage

It is easier to select the right size cooler by looking at the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Most ventless portable air conditioners have a maximum space size listed.

It’s usually around 250 sq. ft. for small and mid-size air conditioners, 500 sq. ft. for bigger coolers, and 700+ sq. ft. for large and industrial swamp coolers.

Calculating the room’s cubic footage is the best way to choose the right size cooler, and this is because manufacturers sometimes underestimate the space that their air conditioners can cool.

Tank Capacity and Hose Connectivity

Ventless Portable Air Conditioners

While you don’t need to worry about tank capacity when purchasing a portable compressor AC, it is essential for ventless coolers.

The water tank capacity is a measure of how long you can cool down before refilling the tank.

You don’t have to refill the tank as often. In addition, You can also leave the cooler all night without having to worry about it running out of fuel (which could cause damage to the pump).

While you don’t need to worry about tank capacity when purchasing a portable compressor AC, it is essential for ventless coolers.

Most portable ventless air conditioners are small to medium-sized and have large tanks that last between 6-10 hours depending on indoor humidity and fan speed.

Large ventless portable air conditioners have large tanks. Depending on the fan’s speed, the tank can last approximately 4-6 hours.

Many coolers also have the option to connect a garden hose for continuous flow. This allows you to keep your cooler running all day long without needing to refill.

Large ventless portable air conditioners have large tanks. Depending on the fan’s speed, the tank can last approximately 4-6 hours.

Indoor or Outdoor Use (Or Both)

Ventless Portable Air Conditioners

Ventless ACs are more portable than compressor ACs and are good to use outdoors without the need for electricity. However, before buying a ventless AC for your backyard or patio, make sure it is outdoor-rated.

Outdoor coolers are made from UV-resistant materials and include a GFCI plug and other weather-protection elements.

These are large and powerful, with sufficient airflow to cover at most 500 sq—open area of approximately 2,000 sq. ft.

Portability

It should be easy to move the cooler around from one room to another. If you have a large and heavy cooler, a ventless cooler with casters is a good option.

A lightweight cooler is best if you intend to use it in several rooms.

And if you want a cooler, you can use it for picnics, in the car, or when camping. It should be even smaller and lighter.

Noise Level

Ventless Portable Air Conditioners

The noise level of ventless portable air conditioners is generally lower than those with compressors. In addition, ventless coolers are more efficient than compressor-based units because they use a lot of air to cool down a room.

A small, quiet ventless cooler is the best option if you don’t like noisy appliances. Because they move less air, coolers are quieter. In addition, you can further reduce the noise level by slowing down the fan speed.

A personal swamp cooler such as KUUOTE or Batlofty is a good option. However, the fan is nearly silent even if the cooler is placed right next to you.

Control Panel & Remote

Ventless Portable Air Conditioners

Finally, make sure to check the options and settings available on your control panel. These are the most crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there ventless portable air conditioners?

Evaporative and swamp coolers are also known as portable, ventless air conditioners, and they cool the room without venting hoses.

How Do Ventless Air Coolers Work?

Ventless Portable Air Conditioners

A pump soaks thick pads with water. A fan then passes warm air over the pads. As the warm air picks up the moisture, it cools down. Finally, the fan distributes the now cooler air around the room.

Ventless air coolers are sometimes also known as evaporative coolers.

Are portable, ventless air conditioners required to be drained?

No, unless you are draining the water tank to clean it. Ventless coolers do not collect moisture. Instead, they add moisture to the air and therefore don’t require to be drained.

Is it worth buying a portable, ventless air conditioner?

It all depends on where you live. Ventless coolers are great for keeping the indoors cool in hot or dry states such as Arizona and California.

A swamp cooler won’t work as well if used in high humidity areas (more than 50%). It can actually make the room uncomfortable by increasing humidity.
